Pediatric Cardiology Electrophysiology Fellowship

About the Program

The overall goal of the Pediatric Cardiology Electrophysiology Fellowship is to continue to be the premier pediatric electrophysiology training program in the world. Over thirty years ago the field of pediatric electrophysiology started at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital. The Pediatric Cardiology Electrophysiology area has since trained a large portion of the pediatric electrophysiologists currently in practice, and these pre-eminent physician scientists work and teach throughout the United States and the world.

The goal for training in pediatric cardiology electrophysiology is to give the fellow the best training possible in clinical pediatric electrophysiology and academic electrophysiology over a 12-18 month period. Upon completion of training, the fellow will be able to practice as an independent consultant in all areas of clinical pediatric cardiology electrophysiology and will also be oriented for a productive career in academic electrophysiology.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Rounds daily on all inpatient consultations seen by the Pediatric Cardiology Electrophysiology Service
  • Participates in a daily graphic sessions where scalar ECGS, 24-hour ambulatory tracings of ECGs, and transtelephonic ECGS are interpreted
  • Participates in a full-day weekly outpatient clinic seeing patients continuously throughout that day with the electrophysiology faculty.
  • Monitors those treadmill tests that are done to evaluate patients who have arrhythmias
  • Participates in all diagnostic electrophysiology catheterizations
  • Participates in all interventional electrophysiology catheterizations (e.g. pacemaker / ICD insertion, ablation of cardiac arrhythmias, etc.)
  • Evaluates daily all cardiac rhythms monitored in the telemetry units at Texas Children’s Hospital
  • Takes first call from home for all Pediatric Cardiology electrophysiology consultations
  • Must perform meaningful clinical or basic science research in the field of pediatric cardiology electrophysiology
  • It is expected that the research will be presented by the fellow at a national meeting and be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal by the end of the fellow’s training in pediatric cardiology electrophysiology.
  • Participate in educational seminars

Admissions

Fellows in Pediatric Cardiology Electrophysiology are selected by submitting the standard Baylor College of Medicine residency application form along with appropriate supporting documents. The applicant is required to interview with different pediatric cardiology faculty and fellows for one day period prior to selection. The applicant will be ranked by all of his or her interviewers and the final selection of the applicant will be done by the selection committee along with the director of the Arrhythmias and Pacing Services, Dr. Jeffrey J. Kim, as well as the cardiology division chief. All applicants for the Electrophysiology Fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology must have completed an ACGME accredited residency program in pediatric cardiology or its equivalent.
