The fellows are offered research training and experience in all disciplines within Pediatric Cardiology. The extensive research conducted at Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine is a strong feature of the fellowship program. Our committed faculty members provide robust support for fellows actively pursuing research projects, and strong collaborations are present throughout the Heart Center and beyond. Fellows with Institutional Research Board approval have access to extensive Heart Center data resources.
Interested fellows can pursue research experiences in clinical cardiovascular medicine and outcomes, healthcare disparities, quality improvement, basic and translational science and educational research. Applicants are not required to have a background in research.
Research In Fellowship Training
RIFT is a program designed to teach every fellow the skills necessary to work thorough a clinical research project of their choosing. This series, facilitated by faculty with outstanding publication records, allows even the least experienced trainee to take the steps necessary to bring a project to completion and are designed to culminate with a presentation by the fellow at a national meeting and a publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Topics include: Data Operationalization, Basic Excel, Advanced Excel, Coding in R, Univariate Analysis, Multivariate Analysis, Preparing an Abstract, and Preparing a Manuscript.
Local Opportunities to Present Research
Pediatric Cardiology Fellows are invited to present their research annually at the Pediatric Research Symposium, The Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) Symposium, and the Annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship.
Publications and Presentations at National Scientific Meetings
Publications by the trainee are expected, not only to share worthwhile information with others, but also to provide a discipline of precise and critical analysis of problems important in the development of the clinical as well as the academic investigator. Publication of research data by the trainee is expected to satisfy the research requirement of the Sub-board of Cardiology of the ABP.
The trainee prepares a research proposal and submits this for review by the faculty. Approved projects are carried out under the supervision of one of the clinical or basic science faculty members. Presentations at scientific meetings are encouraged and provide the trainee with the opportunity to attend a national meeting.
