Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship Admissions and Benefits

Four fellowship positions are offered every year and applications are accepted according to the Match process for pediatric fellowship. We request applicants complete the PHM Fellow Application which can be found through the ERAS website starting early July. Interviews are typically conducted from September through November, and final selection is announced via the National Resident Matching Program in December. For more information, visit the official Match website.

Direct questions to sxolney@texaschildrens.org.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of USMLE I, II, and III or COMLEX I, II and III.
  • Successful completion of an ACGME accredited Pediatrics or Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residency
  • American Board of Pediatrics eligibility or certification
  • Submission of an application, CV, personal statement and three letters of recommendation as instructed on ERAS

For more information, please visit the ERAS website.

We are committed to holistically reviewing every applicant who would like to be considered for our program. We base our interview and rank list decisions on the following criteria:

  1. Readiness For Training in a High Volume, High Complexity Medical Center - Texas Children's Hospital is one of the largest pediatric care centers in the world. We look for applicants who have experience with higher volumes or complexity during the residency training or post-residency careers, as well as those who have excelled clinically in residency.
  2. Academic and Intellectual Curiosity - A major component of our fellowship program is helping fellows identify an academic area to grow and develop in. This is linked directly with the American Board of Pediatrics requirement for completion of scholarly work in fellowship. We look for applicants who have a vision of how the want fellowship to fit into the growth of their career and have experience in different aspects of scholarship in medical school or residency.
  3. Leadership - Our program's mission is to graduate fellows who are ready to lead and innovate in our field. We look for applicants who have had leadership experience in medical school and fellowship, as well as those who have displayed strong leadership traits during clinical training.
  4. Equity-Oriented Mindset and Experience with Diversity - Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the country, and this is directly reflected in our patient population. In addition, we recognize that medical practitioners must approach every aspect of their careers grounded in equity to truly care for all of our patients. We look for applicants who understand the need for an equity-based lens and have experience applying that in their clinical or academic work.
  5. Communication Skills - Communication is a key aspect in both patient care and academic work. We look for applicants who can successfully communicate with patients and team members from a variety of backgrounds, and can clearly express their goals, strengths, and areas for growth.
  6. Teamwork - Every aspect of medicine takes place in the context of a team. We look for applicants who can create strong team dynamics in any setting, clinical or academic.
