Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine offers an ACGME-accredited three-year fellowship in child abuse pediatrics. In the community, CAP conducts an educational program, SCAN (Suspect Child Abuse and Neglect), for the following professionals:
- Community physicians and nurses
- First responders
- Law enforcement
- Child protective services professionals
- Teachers
With an emphasis on detection and prevention, SCAN focuses on the following topics:
- Identifying signs and symptoms of child maltreatment
- Biomechanics of various injuries and how they can indicate underlying abuse
- Importance of family history
- Conditions that mimic abuse
- How to document injury findings
- Local resources for medical consultation or service referrals
For the Community:
CAP conducts a public program for expecting and new parents, Happy Baby, which focuses on aspects of normal infant crying development, techniques for soothing a crying baby and self-care in the prevention of abusive head trauma.
