Pediatric Nephrology Education

• Development of skills in the diagnosis of congenital and acquired renal diseases
• Evaluation and management of hypertension in childhood
• Management of fluid and electrolyte disorders
• Acquisition of knowledge about the normal physiology of the kidney, especially with regard to regulation of body water, electrolyte, and acid-base metabolism

During the course of training, residents:

• Participate in the evaluation and management of children with renal diseases, hypertension and electrolyte problems in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
• See patients admitted to the inpatient renal service as well as participate in interesting consultations at both Texas Children's Hospital and Ben Taub Hospital. Inpatient rounds are conducted daily with a renal faculty member for one-on-one teaching.
• See children with a faculty teacher in the Renal Clinic at least one half-day weekly. The resident is encouraged but not required to review and present one topic at a renal conference during the month.
• Attend a bimonthly renal biopsy conference, a monthly uroradiology conference, and a weekly renal fellows conference for didactic and interactive teaching.
• Are introduced to the management of patients with end-stage renal disease, including chronic dialysis and renal transplantation, and patients with acute renal failure, including acute dialysis and continuous renal replacement therapy. No call is expected.
