Pediatric Interventional Radiology Fellowship

Texas Children's Hospital

Texas Children's Hospital

At the heart of the world’s largest health sciences complex, we offer resources and opportunities unmatched anywhere.

About the Program

Our Interventional Radiology service performs a variety of examinations, ranging from vascular access to percutaneous drainage to biopsies to more complex procedures like treatment of vascular malformations. The fellow in the Pediatric Interventional Radiology Fellowship at Baylor will perform cases with the supervision of the IR faculty, with increasing autonomy allowed as the fellow demonstrates progressive ability per our goals and objectives. Other responsibilities, such as inpatient rounds and conferences, are shared with the faculty and PAs on a rotating basis.

Texas Children’s Hospital is the largest free-standing children’s hospital in the United States. Our radiology department performs more than 190,000 examinations every year, and all subspecialties of pediatric radiology are represented, including general pediatric radiology, neuroradiology, interventional radiology, fetal imaging, nuclear medicine, cardiac imaging and musculoskeletal imaging.

Our department sees a large referral base from all over Texas and much of the southern United States, and our hospital is home to the full spectrum of pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties, including thriving cardiovascular surgery, plastic surgery, orthopedics, oncology, transplantation, neonatology/perinatology, fetal intervention and hepatology services.

Admissions and Benefits

The prospective fellow must have completed ACGME-accredited or equivalent radiology residency and a prior fellowship in either adult interventional radiology or general pediatric radiology.

Original letters of recommendation should be mailed, but all other application materials may be submitted electronically to our coordinator, Sherri Musslewhite.

Submit applications to:

Pediatric Interventional Radiology Fellowship
Texas Children's Hospital
6701 Fannin St., Suite 470
Houston, TX 77030

  • Baylor House Staff Application
  • Current curriculum vitae
  • Personal statement
  • USMLE board scores (photocopies accepted)
  • Three letters of reference
  • Letter of verification from residency program director (if not included as a reference)

Applicants with completed applications are selected to interview after application review by the Education Committee. Our program coordinator will contact selected applicants with a selection of available interview dates.

The interview day consists of interviews with multiple faculty members, a tour of the department with a current fellow, lunch with all available fellows at a local restaurant, and participation in noon conference.

Benefits are provided by Baylor College of Medicine at the PGY-VII salary level. Fellows are given three weeks of vacation and one week of meeting time per year. Extra time off is given around the Christmas/New Year’s holidays.

For additional information, visit the Graduate Medical Education site.

Curriculum

We are approved for one fellow per year. The general Pediatric Radiology fellows will also rotate through IR (for a total of three months out of the year). Occasionally, rotating radiology residents request one-week electives in IR. The IR fellow is always given first choice in selecting the cases for the day. The pediatric radiology fellows will not rotate in IR until at least their fourth month of fellowship, and by that time the IR fellow will be taking on more advanced procedures, while the general pediatric radiology fellows will be concentrating on more basic procedures.

The majority of teaching occurs during procedures. The fellow is expected to research each patient prior to the start of the procedure, to review all pertinent prior imaging studies, and to understand the goals for the procedure and any alternatives or unique aspects to the procedure. The IR fellow also participates in fellow-level conferences with the general pediatric radiology fellows and in Fellows’ College activities, which are organized and sponsored by the Pediatric Fellowship Program Directors group, which serves all of the pediatric medical subspecialty fellowships by providing lectures and workshops on research, mentoring, job searching and other general topics.

The IR fellow is expected to participate in one research project with a faculty mentor, with the goal of submitting a scientific abstract for oral presentation to either the Society for Pediatric Radiology or Society of Interventional Radiology annual meeting. The fellow is expected to travel to the meeting to present the abstract, with expenses paid by the department. A draft of the manuscript based on the accepted abstract is required prior to the meeting.

Participation in additional research projects must be approved by the fellowship program director.

All rotations are in Interventional Radiology unless the fellow wishes to participate in elective rotations in other sections of our department (such as fetal imaging, nuclear medicine, MSK, etc.). Occasionally electives may be arranged at other Medical Center institutions based on the specific needs or interests of the fellow.
