About the Program

Content

The clinical chemistry fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine is a two-year postdoctoral training program intended to prepare trainees for a professional role as assistant or associate director of a clinical chemistry laboratory. This program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Clinical Chemistry (ComACC), and supported by the Ching Nan-Ou endowment for clinical chemistry.

This program provides training for postdoctoral clinical chemistry fellows in all areas of clinical chemistry theory and practice. Representative areas of study include general chemistry, endocrinology, toxicology, and immunology.

Fellows are based at Texas Children’s hospital, which affords trainees the unique opportunity to get in-depth training in pediatric clinical chemistry. In addition to this environment, our program is uniquely situated to provide fellows with exposure to multiple laboratories with varied patient populations and test menus by rotations throughout the Texas Medical Center. Additionally, fellows gain exposure to related areas of laboratory medicine, including microbiology, molecular genetics, and laboratory management, through internal rotations.

Trainees spend the first year of the fellowship in an in-depth lecture series and gaining experience in clinical chemistry. Our program strongly emphasizes scholarship in clinical chemistry, and trainees typically become involved in research during the first year. In the second year, trainees will be involved with supervision of new fellows, teaching medical residents, and will assume on-call duties. In addition, as part of an acting director role in clinical chemistry, trainees will develop expertise in clinical service oversight and management.

Trainees will be expected to take the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC) examinations during their second year to become certified by the ABCC. In addition, they may be interested in subsequently becoming eligible for certification in toxicological chemistry, and/or molecular diagnostics.
