(View the Guidelines and Resources section for more details)

  • Obtain the appropriate institutional approvals (e.g., IACUC protocol, X-ray protocol). For reference, the MMRU IACUC protocol number is AN-5020; X-ray protocol is AX124.

  • For mice not currently housed within the CNRF, investigator must organize the transfer as discussed in "CLAMS Measurement Request Protocol." They also must arrange with CNRC security to get access to the CNRF.

  • For CLAMS studies, investigator, investigator’s staff, or students must co-ordinate with MMRU staff when to be in the MMRU on the days when experiments start and finish to assist with procedures. Provide mice with the correct diet in powdered form. Check on feed, water, and health of mice daily.  For long-term studies, cages and water must be changed a minimum of once every 6 days.

  • Surgically implant telemetric devices for body temperature monitoring.

  • Fill out provided log sheet with mouse information required for programming operation of instrument. Decide whether acclimatization of mice within the CLAMS cages is performed prior to study measurements (an acclimatization period of 2-3 days is strongly recommended).

  • Take down cages at the end of studies.

  • Clean all equipment after every use and log your use of the equipment (except CLAMS).

MMRU Responsibilities

Content
  • Supplies, cleaning, and preparation of CLAMS cages.
  • Instructions and  appliance for preparing powdered diet.
  • Calibration and programming of monitoring devices.
  • Provision of conditions conducive to generation of high-quality data.
  • All energy expenditure data will be reviewed for aberrant values and summarized to give you average daily values for all the parameters measured on each mouse as well as average day and night values. You can also have all your raw data files, and access to computer software to analyze the data as you wish.
