Professional Statement

Michael Coburn, M.D., F.A.C.S., is Professor and Chair of the Scott Department of Urology and holds the Russell and Mary Hugh Scott Chair in Urology at Baylor College of Medicine. A graduate of Cornell University, he earned his medical degree with Honors from the New York University School of Medicine in 1982. He completed both his urology residency and fellowship training at Baylor College of Medicine, serving as an American Foundation for Urologic Disease Scholar during his fellowship. When appointed as Baylor Urology Department Chair, he completed the executive development program, “Leading Academic Medical Departments”, at the University of Texas School of Public Health.

Dr. Coburn served as Chief of Urology at Ben Taub Hospital from 1990 until 2012, focusing his clinical and research interests in the areas of urologic trauma, genital and urethral reconstructive surgery, and sexual and reproductive dysfunction. Throughout his career, he has been deeply committed to medical education, serving as Baylor's Urology Residency Program Director, Chair of the GME Committee at Baylor, and as Chair of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Residency Review Committee for Urology. In addition to his current role as Urology Department Chair, he serves as Vice President of Education at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center.

A recognized leader in the field of urology and urological trauma, Dr. Coburn has served on the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons and on the Executive Committee of its Committee on Trauma. He is a Past President of the Society of Genito-Urinary Reconstructive Surgeons, the major professional organization in his subspecialty. He currently serves as Chair of the Baylor Medicine Nominating and Bylaws Committee. He has received numerous honors for his contributions to education and patient care, including the Robertson Presidential Educator Award, Baylor College of Medicine's highest recognition for lifetime achievement in educational leadership.
