Inaugural Spino-Plastics Reconstruction Conference Held

The 2019 Spino-Plastics Reconstruction Conference, co-chaired by Dr. Edward Reece, associate professor and chief of Adult Plastic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, and Dr. Alexander Ropper, assistant professor and director of Spinal Neurosurgery at Baylor, was a remarkable success, facilitating open collaboration between plastic surgeons and spine surgeons to better address the needs of patients.
The CME-accredited event, which was held at Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center on the McNair Campus Aug. 3, 2019, drew about 60 individuals from across the field. Attendees included physicians, fellows, residents, physician assistants, and nurse/nurse practitioners, specializing in surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, and plastic surgery.
The conference opened with a welcome address given by Dr. Larry H. Hollier, professor and chief of plastic surgery and surgeon-in-chief at Texas Children’s Hospital. Dr. Scott Hansen, professor and chief of Hand and Microvascular Surgery at the University of California San Francisco, was a keynote speaker. The conference was dedicated to Dr. Rex Marco, associate professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the Institute for Academic Medicine at Houston Methodist, Weill Cornell Medical College, who was recently injured in an accident. Dr. Marco’s presentation was offered by Dr. Michael Klebuc, associate professor of Clinical Plastic Surgery at the Institute for Academic Medicine at Houston Methodist, Weill Cornell Medical College.
The case-based and panel discussions throughout the day empowered those in attendance to bring knowledge of the latest techniques, research, and education back to their practice groups and/or departments.
Among several other speakers, Dr. Alfonso Fuentes, assistant professor of surgery at Baylor and chief of neurosurgery at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, presented, “Failure in Cervical Spinal Fusion,” and Dr. Sebastian Winocour, assistant professor of surgery at Baylor and director of Aesthetic Resident Training, spoke on, “Rib Bone Grafting Technique.”
