He was born in Charleston, South Carolina and grew up in Montreal, Canada. He completed medical school and general surgery residency at McGill University. During residency, he also completed a Master of Science degree, researching novel treatments for scarring and keloid formation in an effort to help patients with these conditions.

Dr. Winocour then completed a second residency in plastic surgery at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. He further refined his skills by pursuing a one year microsurgery fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center, training in advanced methods of cancer reconstruction, including DIEP flaps for breast reconstruction. During his fellowship he was granted a prestigious Clinical Specialist faculty appointment at the institution.

Dr. Winocour has published extensively in the field of plastic surgery, and has authored over 20 manuscripts in leading journals, 19 abstracts at scientific conferences and two book chapters.
