The Verna and Marrs McLean Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at Baylor College of Medicine was formed from the recent merger of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology. The department has established itself as a leader in structural biology, chemical biology, and drug discovery. We utilize innovative approaches to translate basic science research into therapeutic applications. Our research interests include chemical biology, natural product discovery, small-molecule drug discovery, macromolecular structure determination by cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM), X-ray crystallography, and NMR techniques, in situ cryo-electron tomography, molecular biophysics, and proteomics. The department is home to the Therapeutic Innovation Center (THINC) faculty, and our faculty collaborate extensively with the Center for Drug Discovery. Our faculty members are dedicated to mentoring graduate and postdoctoral students by fostering a multidisciplinary approach to make them become scientists and physicians ready to translate basic research discoveries into clinical applications.
