Visiting Pediatric Residents

Pediatric residents from other institutions have the opportunity to take an elective in Pediatric Infectious Diseases. This arrangement is made by contacting the Graduate Medical Education Office at Baylor College of Medicine requesting an application for "visiting house officer rotation."

Residents also should contact the Infectious Disease Program director to determine if the elective will be available. If you are currently enrolled in a residency program in Texas and have a postgraduate resident permit, (training permit) your permit covers your rotation at Baylor. If you are currently enrolled in a program outside Texas, you will need to contact the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners for a postgraduate resident permit application. Because this process often takes several weeks, interested residents are encouraged to obtain the necessary documents early.

Resident and Medical Student Electives

Objectives

  • Develop skills and habits of a meticulous approach to the pediatric history and physical examination.
  • Understand the clinical presentation, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of common pediatric infectious diseases (e.g., meningitis, osteomyelitis, pneumonia, sepsis and infections in compromised hosts).
  • Attain a working knowledge of bacteriologic spectrum of commonly prescribed antibiotics.
  • Understand the use and interpretation of peak and trough levels of antibiotics and inhibitory versus bactericidal levels (i.e., MIC/MBC, SIC/SBC).
  • Understand the basic methods of susceptibility testing.
  • Develop skills of literature review on pertinent topics.

Responsibilities

  • See consults; patients will be assigned to residents during the day by the fellow or attending. Perform initial history and physical examination, review basic texts and literature on the subject and develop a working differential diagnosis.
  • Perform daily physical exams, write notes on assigned patients. Check results of current laboratory and diagnostic studies on patients. Confirm that studies obtained at our request are received or performed.
  • Assist in checking cultures for patients on the infectious diseases service.
  • Students do not take calls on this rotation. Residents take beeper call from home on average of six nights during the month and are assigned one weekend on call to round with the attending physician.
