The ACGME-accredited Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine Fellowship in the Department of Pathology & Immunology at Baylor College of Medicine offers comprehensive training in the principles and practice of Blood Banking, Transfusion Medicine and Coagulation.

The primary objective of the fellowship program is to enable trainees to become expert consultants in the principles, techniques, applications, and laboratory and clinical management of Blood Banking, Transfusion Medicine and Coagulation.  At completion of the one-year training period, fellows are eligible for board-certification by the American Board of Pathology.

Major clinical training sites include Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center with additional clinical experiences at Ben Taub County Hospital, Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center and Houston Methodist Hospital.

The fellowship program is a training program with members of clinical faculty from the Departments of Pathology & Immunology.  Core clinical rotations include formal training in blood banking, apheresis, clinical coagulation, laboratory and blood bank management with focused experienced in donor center and reference laboratory.

Fellows receive in-depth training in the principles and clinical application of blood bank, transfusion medicine, apheresis and coagulation, in pediatrics and adults including in high-risk pregnancy.  Fellows will also be involved in direct patient’s care in settings of ECMO, liver failure and VAD at Texas Children’s Hospitals.

Baylor College of Medicine offers an outstanding environment for translational research opportunities in Transfusion Medicine, Apheresis and Coagulation.  Our fellows are encouraged to work on research projects with faculty mentorship and to attend national meetings to present their works.
