Nephrology Fellowship Training Sites

Overview of the Clinical Training Sites

We offer a comprehensive clinical training environment and our trainees are involved in all aspects of kidney disease. Our graduates highlight the diversity of patients and healthcare systems along with dedicated teaching faculty as the main strengths of our training program. From glomerular diseases to complex acid-base and electrolyte disturbances to pregnancy-related kidney disease to critical care nephrology, our fellows truly see it all!

This is an approximation, as the exact number of weeks may vary yearly for each fellow.

PGY 6 Rotations by Pavilion in Weeks

This is an approximation, as the exact number of weeks may vary yearly for each fellow based on preference- some prefer more nights, others prefer more inpatient rotations.

  • Ben Taub: 8 (inpatient rotation)
  • Baylor St. Luke’s General Nephrology: 2 (inpatient rotation)
  • Houston Methodist: 6 (inpatient rotation)
  • VA General Nephrology Nephrology: 10 (inpatient rotation)
  • VA Transplant Nephrology: 4-6 (inpatient rotation)
  • Outpatient Rotations: 6
  • Night Float: 6
  • Elective: 8
  • Vacation, Conference and Educational Leave: 4

*Night Float: One fellow takes overnight calls for all pavilions from Sunday through Friday, 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. During this time, the fellow is free from daytime responsibilities and focuses on managing consults that require urgent evaluation. This rotation is conducted as home call with a dedicated call room available at the Baylor McNair Campus when needed.

Outpatient Rotations

We believe that a robust outpatient experience is critical to educating the future nephrologist. The table below highlights the various clinics that our fellows rotate through during the fellowship.

In addition, each fellow will have 12 months of monthly continuity clinic at either Harris Health, VA Medical Center, or Baylor McNair Clinic. This will involve longitudinal care with the same patients and faculty mentor.

Inpatient Rotations

The diversity of hospital systems is a defining strength of our nephrology fellowship program. Like a podocyte interdigitating with the many pavilions of the Texas Medical Center, our program is deeply integrated across institutions, offering fellows a rich and varied clinical experience. Each rotation immerses trainees in the care of patients from across Houston and beyond, reflecting the city’s global reach and medical excellence. Kidney transplantation is a cornerstone of our training, with fellows actively managing approximately 150 new kidney transplant recipients annually at three leading centers: Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, Houston Methodist Hospital, and the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. Additionally, fellows rotate at Texas Children’s Hospital, gaining exposure to obstetric nephrology and the care of patients with congenital heart disease—broadening their expertise in complex and specialized areas of nephrology.
