Infection and Immunity T32 Training Program

About the Program

The Infection and Immunity National Research Service Award (NRSA) post-doctoral training program based at Baylor College of Medicine was awarded in 2003 and has an outstanding record of training investigators at the cutting edge of research in infectious diseases and immunity. Over 90 percent of the program’s graduates remain in a research or research-related career. This program is the sole NRSA at Baylor or the Texas Medical Center that supports the breadth of research training in infections and global health, and one of very few programs in this region of the United States.

This training program is for post-doctoral trainees with either a M.D. or Ph.D. degree. Successful applicants will conduct research on infectious diseases or immunology related to infectious diseases. Training tracks include laboratory-based research, patient-based research, and global and public health research. Applicants should be focused on developing a career in academics, with a strong preference for candidates who want to become independently funded researchers in infectious diseases topics. Appointed trainees will complete research with their mentor and be guided by a mentoring team, complete Baylor’s Fundamentals of Clinical Investigation course, complete training in research ethics, and participate in various tailored career development activities. Support for selected graduate coursework and Masters degrees is available, if appropriate. Between one and four positions are available for one or two years of salary support. A second year of funding is contingent on successful completion of the first year and on program priorities.

Admissions

The Infection and Immunity T32 Training Program at Baylor College of Medicine accepts applicants in the spring of each academic year. A call for applications is circulated to the BCM community and T32 research mentors each spring.

Applicants should be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, however with the generous support of Baylor College of Medicine we can consider highly qualified applicants who are authorized to work but do not have citizenship or residency status.

Interested applicants should submit all of the following:

  1. A one-page letter of interest describing your career goals and whether you anticipate needing one or two years of support
  2. Your current CV
  3. A one-page research project description
  4. A letter of reference from an internal or external faculty member attesting to your research and academic potential.

Questions can be directed to Dr. Thomas Giordano (tpg@bcm.edu) or Dr. Indira Mysorekar (indira.mysorekar@bcm.edu).

Curriculum

The program's structure supports excellent training in translational team science. Core training activities for all M.D. and Ph.D. trainees include developing an individual development plan, taking courses on clinical investigation, grants and contracts and human subjects research; participating in team science and career development seminars; and attending a monthly research-in-progress seminar series, a weekly journal club and a yearly scientific retreat. All trainees must present at these meetings.

The program offers three training tracks:

  • Laboratory-based research
  • Patient-based research
  • Global and public health research
