North East Adolescent Program

The North East Adolescent Project (NEAP)

The North East Adolescent Project (NEAP) is an educational outreach component of the Teen Health Clinic.

The North East Adolescent Project (NEAP) is a pivotal initiative aimed at enhancing the well-being of adolescents in Houston, particularly in some of the city's most underserved areas. Founded in 1989 through a collaboration with Harris County Commissioner El Franco Lee, NEAP is an integral part of the Teen Health Clinic. This project uses the expertise of medically licensed master-level social workers to deliver essential educational and mental health outreach services.

NEAP was established with clear goals in mind:

  • Reduce Teen Pregnancy: By educating adolescents on the importance of safe practices and providing resources to prevent pregnancy, NEAP aims to lower teen pregnancy rates.
  • Prevent STDs: The project emphasizes the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) through education and awareness.
  • Provide Mental Health Services: Recognizing the critical need for mental health support, NEAP offers counseling through both in-person therapy and teletherapy.

Mental Health Counseling

NEAP's social workers are dedicated to providing comprehensive mental health counseling. They employ a combination of in-person therapy and teletherapy to ensure that all adolescents have access to the support they need, regardless of their circumstances.

Community Outreach

Outreach workers play a crucial role in NEAP's mission. They travel to various community centers, including schools, churches, and apartment complexes, to disseminate vital information promoting a healthy lifestyle. Their efforts focus on:

  • Educating teens about responding to sexual pressure
  • Providing strategies to prevent teen pregnancy
  • Offering guidance on how to avoid sexually transmitted diseases

The Northeast Adolescent Project has made significant strides in improving the lives of adolescents in Houston's poorest areas. By addressing critical issues such as teen pregnancy, STDs, and mental health, NEAP empowers young individuals to make informed decisions about their health and futures. Through ongoing education and support, the project continues to foster a healthier, more informed adolescent community.
