N. Thao N. Galván, M.D., MPH, assistant professor of Surgery in the Division of Abdominal Transplantation, and Stuart J. Corr, BEng, MEng, Ph.D., assistant professor and director of Surgical Innovation and Technology Development in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, received $25,000 Pediatric Device Faculty Seed Grants from The Southwest Pediatric Consortium at Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine.

The Southwest Pediatric Device Consortium (SWPDC) supports pediatric device innovators intending to address the shortage of needed new medical devices for children, a public health problem that has been acknowledged by the FDA. The consortium includes clinical, scientific/engineering, investment, regulatory and academic partners in the Texas Medical Center, the Greater Houston area, and the Southwestern U.S.

Dr. Galván’s project, titled “Bioartificial Kidney,” includes pre-clinical studies for the pediatric version of a novel implantable, dialysate-free, bioartificial kidney to address end-stage renal disease in children, especially in global, low-resource settings. Dr. Corr’s project, called “Lil Halos," includes continued development of a non-invasive monitoring device to log breathing and movement patterns in infants and alert healthcare providers of life-threatening events to avoid Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SUID).
