Division Overview
The Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery includes the Hernia Center and General Surgery Clinics as well as staffing of intensive care units at our affiliated hospitals. This section includes a large cohort of surgical intensivists and advanced practice clinicians specialized in the surgical treatment, research, and education related to caring for the critically ill or critically injured patient.
The department offers both a General Surgery Residency and Surgical Critical Care Residency. Our general surgery residency program remains one of the best in the country. Surgery residents are exposed to acute care surgery and surgery critical care at all of our affiliate hospitals. Our residents also excel in operative experience with penetrating trauma at Ben Taub Hospital. Our faculty are dedicated to teaching residents in the operating room, at the bedside, and in multidisciplinary clinics and conferences.
Our faculty are leaders in their field through their contributions to the advancement of surgical practice. The whole gamut of surgical research is embraced by our division members from basic science research, to outcomes research, to leadership on multicenter randomized clinical trials. As a result of our research efforts, patients receive specialized diagnostic assessment; access to the newest treatment modalities, including clinical trials of new pharmacologic therapies and emerging surgical techniques; and coordinated follow-up of their care at all of our clinical sites.
