Pediatric Transplant Hepatology Fellowship

Program Director Message

“You will have many great years in this field” a mentor once told me. We are constantly learning and the Pediatric Transplant Hepatology Fellowship is a one-year immersion in this incredible area. This time allows for a dedicated investigation of hepatobiliary disease in children. Beyond the volume, we have taken on unique challenges with our depth in subspecialty liver disease. We have dedicated centers in solid tumors (hepatoblastoma), cystic fibrosis, and metabolic disease. Texas Children’s Hospital is also recognized as a Wilson’s Disease Center of Excellence.

The program allows a view of almost every facet within transplant hepatology and an opportunity to challenge oneself with the investigation of the complexities surrounding the pre-, peri- and post-transplant period. Our faculty and fellows participate in numerous forums to discuss patients, quality improvement, and multi-disciplinary approaches to problems.

The people in this program are one of my favorite parts of being in the transplant program. Members of the Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital Liver Center have become Liver Center Directors, GI and Hepatology division heads around the country, NIH funded investigators and leaders within several national societies. Our research endeavors span the microbiome and clinical management of variceal bleeding, early intervention and diagnosis of biliary atresia to fatty liver disease.

As you will quickly see, Houston has an incredible food scene, with James Beard awardees to Bravo Top Chefs scattered throughout the city. In “Clutch City”, you can catch a Rockets (NBA), Texans (NFL), Astros (MLB) or Dynamo (MLS) game. Perhaps just as strong are the college allegiances whether Houston Cougars, UT Longhorns, Texas A&M Aggies or even a misplaced Michigan Wolverine. You may even play some tennis, cricket or one of the many pick-up soccer leagues around town. And of course, the often rivaled, never matched Houston Rodeo!

We pride ourselves on our dedication to quality, excellence in clinical care, research, education and service to the community. Building upon a strong base, the Pediatric Transplant Hepatology Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine bridges the Texas Medical Center with an amazing way to spend a year and beyond…

Best regards,
Douglas S. Fishman, MD FAAP FASGE
