Didactic

Fellowship didactic conferences are held weekly on Thursdays, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Fellows are protected from all PEM shifts to attend conferences. Conferences are designed to meet the ABP PEM core content specifications.

Active conference series include: board review (2 hours monthly), career development workshops (as part of Texas Children’s Hospital Fellows College), education series (twice yearly as part of Texas Children’s Hospital Fellows College), ethics (1-2 hours yearly), fellow’s case conference (1 hour monthly), Journal club (1 hour monthly), literature review (2 hours quarterly), fellows’ lectures (given by fellows, 1 hour monthly), global health, joint conferences with EM residencies, pediatric critical care, case review and quality improvement (monthly), research topics (1 hour monthly, 2 hours quarterly), ultrasound (2-day course offered beginning of first year; 8-10 hours in conference annually) .

Specific series: cardiology, GI, neurology, orthopedics, trauma, surgical, psychiatry, radiology, renal, GI, endocrine, heme-onc, sports medicine, toxicology (each typically occurs 2-4 hours/year).

In addition, PEM fellows participate in quarterly PEM fellowship simulation days which occur in lieu of regular Thursday conferences. PEM fellows also are active participants in in-situ simulations in the emergency room, procedural workshops and also teach using simulation.

These small group discussions are designed to enhance fellows’ critical appraisal skills. Fellows, with faculty guidance, lead journal club by selecting article(s) for review, provide critical appraisal of the articles using the CASP model, and lead discussion of the articles during the monthly Journal Clubs.

PediSTEPPS. Several members of the PEM faculty as well as PEM fellows are actively involved in this monthly simulation course, teaching pediatric resuscitation to prehospital providers. All third-year fellows teach at this course during their EMS rotation.

Child Car Seat Safety. One of our recent fellowship graduates initiated a project looking at proper car seat installation in emergency center patients.

PEM faculty and fellows are actively involved in multiple local and global community-based educational projects and research.

Research

Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine's research reputation attracts patients with unusual and challenging problems and enhances the variety of clinical material available for teaching. Moreover, faculty members' investigative skills add depth to the teaching program and enhance the residents' and fellows' understanding of pathophysiology.

The scientific attitude and problem-solving approach demanded of investigative work are regularly carried over into the clinical setting. The practice of evidence-based medicine is not only taught in our pediatric emergency medicine curriculum but also encouraged in our section members' clinical practice.
