The Texas Medical Board Infectious Diseases (TMB ID) Advanced Research Fellowship Program is an optional third year of fellowship training, which provides research opportunities that range from molecular to clinical and can include investigations of all categories of microorganisms. Particular strengths are in pathogenesis of bacterial infections and treatment and prevention of viral diseases, although nearly every area of infectious disease medicine is included. This research track is designed for fellows committed to developing a career in academic medicine, particularly one focused on research.
Fellows are encouraged to decide midway through the first year of their fellowship whether they will pursue this avenue of training. Fellows must successfully complete the ACGME two-year required ID fellowship program before starting the TMB ID research track. Funding for the TMB ID research track is available through fellows' mentors' projects, and selected fellows may be funded by the Infection and Immunity T32 training program. All fellows on the TMB ID research track will be expected to enroll in the Clinical Scientist Training Program and complete a Certificate of Added Qualification or MS degree. Submission of an application for an NIH K23, K08 or VA career development award is highly encouraged toward the end of the extra year of research. The TMB ID research track affords fellows an opportunity to publish their research in peer-reviewed scientific journals, submit NIH grants or showcase their research at national scientific meetings.
Fellows will continue to be assessed during their tenure in the TBM ID research track. All fellows will be evaluated once every six months by the program director and their research advisory committee. Each trainee will present his or her research twice yearly to the Baylor College of Medicine Infectious Diseases section during Journal Club and our Annual Research Retreat. This research presentation will enable the fellow to get feedback from the Infectious Diseases section and facilitate planning of future research and career directions. Fellows are strongly encouraged to submit abstracts to the annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and other national meetings.
