Our mission is to improve the lives of individuals affected by endocrine disorders through excellence in patient care, discovery, and education. Our section is recognized nationally by U.S. News & World Report, with Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center Endocrinology Program ranked among the top 50 programs in the country.
With over 30 faculty, our section spans the full spectrum of endocrine disease, from diabetes and obesity to thyroid, adrenal, and pituitary disorders. We provide care across leading institutions, including Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, and Ben Taub Hospital. The Baylor Medicine Endocrinology Practice was recently recognized with the “Silver and Gold Achievement Awards” for its work in blood pressure, cholesterol, and Type 2 diabetes management.
We continue to expand our sub-specialty centers of excellence. This includes active research in adrenal disease, where our team is contributing to a multicenter study on lipid-poor adrenal masses, and advances in obesity and metabolism through the work of McNair Scholar Dr. Qiancheng Zhao. Our faculty also play leadership roles nationally; I, Dr. Mark Herman, testified before Congress on the economic impact of diabetes, and Dr. Mandeep Bajaj currently serves as President of Medicine and Science for the American Diabetes Association.
Our research efforts span basic, translational, and clinical science. Highlights include a $2.5 million NIH R01 to Dr. Sean Hartig to study leptin bioavailability, multiple federal and foundation awards to Drs. Dongyin Guan and Zheng Sun’s lab, and high-impact publications from Dr. Rajagopal Sekhar. Our section also includes nationally recognized educators and mentors. Dr. Bryan Jiang received the Norton Rose Fulbright Award for Teaching and now leads assessment for the BCM Foundational Sciences Curriculum.
Education and training remain a core part of our mission. We offer a highly regarded fellowship program in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism that combines clinical training with strong opportunities for research. The program supports early-career development through symposia, mentoring, and national leadership engagement, including the Alan J. Garber Symposium and Diabetes Symposium led by Dr. Bajaj.
