About the Program

The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine is a 12-month ACGME accredited training program where fellows rotate at 3 clinical sites and gain expertise in percutaneous treatment of coronary artery disease, structural heart disease, and peripheral vascular disease.

Program Director's Message

Thank you for your interest in Baylor College of Medicine Interventional Cardiology Training Program! The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at BCM is a one-year ACGME-accredited program. The fellowship aims to provide Interventional Cardiology fellows with clinical training that is well rounded and unique in the breadth of experience. Our fellows receive a strong foundation in interventional cardiology to meet the 6 general competencies promulgated by the ACGME and endorsed by the ABIM. These competency domains are Medical Knowledge, Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, Systems-Based Practice, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, and Professionalism.

At the end of the training, fellows are well trained to take a leadership role in simple and complex coronary interventions, insertion and management of mechanical circulatory support devices, intravascular imaging, coronary atherectomy, and peripheral interventions. Fellows also gain significant experience in structural heart interventions like atrial septal defect closure, patent foramen ovale closure, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, balloon valvuloplasty and get exposure to left atrial appendage occlusion and transcatheter mitral valve therapies.

With teaching sites distributed over 3 unique facilities, fellows get exposed to a variety of patient populations and pathology. Training sites include Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center - the largest VA medical center in the US, Ben Taub Hospital - the only public cardiac catheterization laboratory for Harris County, which is the second largest county in the US, and Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center- a busy tertiary care hospital.

In addition to our focus on excellence in clinical training, weekly conference series comprising case conferences, quality improvement, and core curriculum lectures span throughout the year. Our fellows remain academically productive despite being clinically busy, with many publishing manuscripts during their training, presenting at national meetings, and pursuing careers in academic Interventional Cardiology. Whatever your future goals, be it private practice or academia, we aim to train leaders in any clinical setting in which you may choose to work. At BCM, we can provide the clinical experience, mentorship, and educational resources to allow you to reach your personal goals and potential as you embark on a successful career in Interventional Cardiology.

I encourage you to apply to our program and see if we are a good fit for you.

Waleed T. Kayani, M.D.

Curriculum

Fellows rotate at each of the following hospitals: Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Hospital, Ben Taub Hospital and Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital.

Each fellow is expected to easily perform more than 350 procedures, including coronary interventions of all complexities, insertion and management of mechanical circulatory support, intravascular imaging, coronary atherectomy, atrial septal defect, patent foramen ovale closure, percutaneous aortic valve implantation (TAVI), and a variety of peripheral interventions.

The program gradually increases the fellows' responsibility based on fellow’s comfort level. Fellows are expected to manage patients independently during the second half of training with commensurate supervision from the faculty physician.

By the end of training, fellows will develop skills that will enable them to function as independent interventional operators and develop basic administrative skills to become future catheterization laboratory directors.

The fellows meet with the program director semi-annually to discuss their progress in training, training plans, and future endeavors in the field of interventional cardiology.
