Geriatric Fellowship Advanced Training Years

The Baylor College of Medicine Geriatric Fellowship offers opportunities for advanced training year(s) in a number of tracks. Each advanced fellowship experience is individually crafted to align with the career goals of the trainee. Application and acceptance into an advanced training track is on a case-by-case basis and suited to the professional goals and interests of applicants.  Fellows who plan to pursue advanced fellowship years have the opportunity to substitute an interest-specific clinical experience for one of their continuity experiences and to engage in related academic work during the first year of training. Advanced training is available in:

  • Wound care: Baylor has one of the only geriatrics-focused wound care programs in the United States. It includes outpatient wound care clinics, inpatient consultation, and tele-wound to outlying areas. Trainees participate in a variety of specialty experiences. One year of advanced training is available for interested fellows.
  • Palliative medicine: The Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine Section is pleased to partner with the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, with two dedicated positions within the MD Anderson Palliative Medicine fellowship. Geriatrics fellows receive preference for these positions, offering the opportunity to become ACGME-qualified in both Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine in two years. Learn more.
  • Medical directorship: During their advanced fellowship year, trainees can complete the first year of the two-year required training for medical directorship certification. They will be mentored by Dr. Trumble; training includes attending interdisciplinary team meetings and learning quality assurance process improvement at a community nursing home. Individuals are able to complete the final year of certification independently.
  • Medical education and educational research
  • Quality improvement and patient safety scholarship
  • Research (basic, translational, health services or clinical)

In addition to pursuing advanced training in Geriatrics, several of our recent fellows have pursued additional fellowship training, especially in hematology-oncology. During the initial fellowship year, we are able to support these interests by providing a continuity clinic in that area in addition to academic projects that combine Geriatrics and the other medical specialty.
