Our research interests are in the areas of structure determination of biological nano-machines by electron cryo-microscopy (cryo-EM) techniques and computer reconstruction, and the use of structures to reveal their structure-based functional mechanisms. Our structural technique is ideal for studying the structures of the large majority of macromolecules and macromolecular complexes not amenable to crystallization, including those with multiple conformations and intrinsically disordered domains.

Specifically, our research focuses on nuclear receptor complexes that mediate gene regulation, membrane proteins such as drug efflux pumps and ion channels, and viruses, whose structures we have been able to resolve at unprecedented resolutions.
