2025 Lab Events

  • Nov. 11, 2025 - Dr. Huo and team members attended the 2025 Scientific Sessions, the American Heart Association conference meeting held in New Orleans, USA.
  • Oct. 6, 2025 - Dr. Qian Ma received the Dean’s Award, which acknowledges her for obtaining the competitive K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award from the National Institutes of Health.
  • Sept. 23, 2025 - Dr. Qian Ma received the Notice of Award (NOA) from the NIH for her K99 grant, entitled "Endothelial de novo nucleotide synthesis in atherosclerosis.“  Dr. Qian will perform her senior postdoc training in Dr. Huo’s lab for the next two years. And then she will move forward to an independent research position. Congrats on Qian’s outstanding achievement!
  • Sept. 16, 2025 - Dr. Zhiping Liu published his research work from his own research group in PNAS. Zhiping was trained in Dr. Huo’s lab for his Postdoc Training and started his own research program 5 years ago. Over the past years, his group has been very productive. Congrats on his great achievement.
  • July 30, 2025 - Miss Tammy Lu joined the lab as a research volunteer. Tammy, an undergraduate from Emory U last year, will learn and start her research experience in Dr. Huo’s lab. Welcome Tammy!
  • July 1, 2025 - Dr. Qiuhua Yang started her own laboratory at the Renaissance School of Medicine, Stony Brook University. Qiuhua was a visiting scholar from Peking University and subsequently completed a Postdoctoral training program in Dr. Huo's laboratory. Qiuhua has been extremely diligent over the past decade and has achieved significant success with her research projects. We wish Dr. Yang great success in her future research endeavors.
  • May 7, 2025 - Drs. Huo and Cai attended the 2025 AVOR Conference Meeting in Salt Lake City. Dr. Cai presented (oral presentation) his research work on the role of Endothelial Pfkfb3 in subretinal fibrosis and received much interest from many other researchers.   
  • April 26, 2025 - Miss Peishan Xu joined the lab as a Research Assistant. Peishan will participate in lab management, mouse husbandry, as well as performance of some research projects. Welcome Peishan!
  • Jan. 16, 2025 - Dr. Yuqing Huo’s Laboratory has received grant support from the Retinal Research Foundation (RRF) to study subretinal fibrosis in Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). The RRF acknowledges the laboratory’s excellent scientific endeavors and states, ‘’RRF congratulates your laboratory for the excellent scientific endeavors, and awaits with eager anticipation the important findings of your approved project!”.

2024 Events

  • Dec. 10, 2024 - Dr. Qian Ma received Dean’s Award from the graduate School of Biomedical Sciences of Baylor College of Medicine.  This award acknowledges her wonderful accomplishment in obtaining her competitive Postdoctoral Fellowship Award from the American Heart Association.
  • Nov. 9, 2024 - Dr. Qian Ma received her score for her K99 application to NIH. It is 15. It is a top score. Congratulation to Dr. Ma! Obtaining K99 grant is a major step moving to an independent research position.
  • Nov. 6, 2024 - Dr. Qiuchen Cao’s result for his JEM paper was selected as cover image of Journal of Experimental Medicine (JEM)’s November issue. Congratulation to Dr. Cao.
  • May 2, 2024 - Our research on the role of adenosine receptor 2A in subretinal fibrosis of AMD was highlighted in National Eye Institute. Learn More.
  • March 6, 2024 - Dr. Qiuhua Yang’s result for her STM paper was selected as cover image of Science Translational Medicine (STM)’s March issue. Congratulation to Dr. Yang.

2015 - 2023 Events

  • Sep. 1, 2023 - Dr. Qiuhua Yang is awarded NIH K99/R00 grant! The project title is "RPE PFKFB2 in subretinal fibrosis“. Dr. Yang is moving forward to her independent research position!
  • Jan. 1, 2023 - Dr. Qian Ma is awarded AHA postdoctoral fellowship! Project title "Adenosine receptor 2A-mediated endothelial to mesenchymal transition (EndMT) promotes vascular calcification"
  • Dec. 30, 2022 - Dr. Huo’s laboratory was interviewed by WJBF NewsChannel 6, an ABC affiliate in Augusta, Georgia regarding recent research finding in new target in fight against heart disease Learn More.
  • Nov. 29, 2022 - Our research on the role of purine de novo synthesis in proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells and the development of atherosclerosis in rodent model was reported by the Medical College of Georgia. The title of report is “New target in the fight against heart disease”
  • Nov. 7, 2022 - Dr. Qian Ma received Travel Award for Early Career Investigators at  AHA 2022 Scientific Sessions (Chicago).
  • May 13, 2022 - Dr. Qian Ma was awarded Investigator in Training Award at Vascular Discovery 2022 (Seattle)
  • April 2, 2021 - Dr. Jiean Xu is awarded AHA postdoctoral fellowship! Project title "The role of VSMC PFKFB3 in atherosclerosis“ (scored 1%, a top score!)
  • April 1, 2021 - Dr. Qiuhua Yang is awarded AHA postdoctoral fellowship! Project title "The role of endothelial PFKFB3 in diabetic vascular calcification"
  • Aug. 10, 2020 - Our research on the role of glycolysis in the development of retinal pathological angiogenesis was highlighted in National Eye Institute. Learn More.
  • Aug. 10, 2020 - Our work on mutual metabolic interactions of macrophages and endothelial cells in retinal pathological angiogenesis was reported by the Medical College of Georgia. The title of report is ‘New treatment targets found for blinding retinal disease”. Learn More.
  • April 1, 2020 - Dr. Zhiping Liu received Career Development Award from American Heart Association. This award will support Dr. Liu to move to his independent research within three years.
  • Nov. 10, 2018 - Dr. Zhiping Liu received PVD Travel Award for Young Investigators from American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2018 in San Francisco, California, USA. Title of his research: Adenosine Kinase Epigenetically Regulates Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Formation.
  • Aug. 24, 2018 - Dr. Zhiping Liu received his Postdoc Fellowship award from American Heart Association, USA, which will support Dr. Liu research for two years. The title of his study: The role of macrophage PFKFB3 in retinal angiogenesis.
  • May 8, 2018 - Our work on the role of PFKFB3-mediated glycolysis in the development of pulmonary hypertension was reported by the Medical College of Georgia. The title of report is “New pulmonary hypertension treatment target in the bull’s-eye”.
  • Oct. 9, 2017 - Our research on the role of adenosine receptor 2a in retinal pathological angiogenesis was reported by the Medical College of Georgia. The title of report is “Likely new treatment target identified for diabetic retinopathy“
  • Nov. 10, 2015 - Dr. Yiming Xu receives an ATVB Travel Award for Young Investigators from Scientific Sessions 2015 (Orlando, FL). Additionally, the research Dr. Xu’s recent presented at ATVB research is selected as the best of basic Science Abstract, and Dr. Xu will re-present his work in Scientific Sessions 2015.
  • May 7, 2015 - Dr. Yiming Xu receives an ATVB Travel Award For Young Investigator from ATVB/PVD 2015 Scientific Sessions 2015 (San Francisco, USA). The title of his presentation: Endothelin intracellular adenosine epigenetically regulates angiogenesis.
  • Jan. 1, 2015 - Dr. Yiming Xu receives his Postdoc Fellowship from American Heart Association. This two-year award will support him to study the role of myeloid PFKFB3 in atherosclerosis.
