Professional Statement
What distinguishes my work in behavioral medicine is its focus on the role of family factors in cancer treatment and rehabilitation. My mission is to develop, implement, and disseminate psychosocial interventions to improve patient and caregiver health behaviors and quality of life. My work spans the cancer prevention and control continuum and includes studies of couples coping with pre-neoplastic conditions (Barrett’s Esophagus), patients undergoing radiotherapy for head and neck cancer and their spouses, families coping with advanced cancers (lung, metastatic breast), and oral cancer survivors (post-treatment) and their caregivers. My research interests include:
• Understanding the multiple effects of cancer on patients and their family caregivers
• Identifying predictors of emotional and physical well-being in cancer survivors and their family caregivers
• Developing and evaluating behavioral interventions to improve the quality of life of cancer patients and their family caregivers throughout the trajectory of the disease
• Optimizing patients’ participation in their own care and the coordination of care
• Translation and dissemination of evidence-based supportive care programs
