Jorge Portuondo, M.D., second-year general surgery resident in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, has been awarded one year of funding on the BCM CPRIT Training Grant. The focus of his work, under the guidance of his mentor, Nader Massarweh, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor of surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology at Baylor, will be to evaluate and compare quality metrics in the care of gastric cancer patients by exploring the relationship between adherence to NCCN guidelines regarding multimodality therapy and patient outcomes.

The information gleaned from this study will be used to guide quality ratings of gastric cancer care across the U.S. Dr. Portuondo graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2013 and FIU College of Medicine in 2017. He is interested in a career in academic surgery with a focus in health services research and will begin the first of his two clinical research years in July 2019.
