Evenings with Genetics: new therapies for genetic conditions

Many patients with genetic conditions that were previously untreatable are finding new hope thanks to scientific advancements in therapies. Baylor College of Medicine will host a panel of experts to discuss the newest treatments available for these patients at an upcoming Evenings with Genetics virtual seminar on Tuesday, March 8, at 7 p.m.

The webinar, titled “Navigating New Therapies: 21st Century Treatments for Genetic Disorders,” will address new therapies for genetic conditions that previously had no effective treatment. The evening’s panelists are Dr. V. Reid Sutton, professor of molecular and human genetics at Baylor and director of the inborn errors of metabolism service at Texas Children’s Hospital, and Alicia Turner, assistant professor of molecular and human genetics at Baylor and nurse practitioner at Texas Children’s.  

Panelists will discuss treatments like gene therapy, along with specific examples of ongoing and completed clinical trials at Baylor/Texas Children’s. A parent speaker will join the panel to discuss their child’s journey to gene therapy.

“Roughly 300 million individuals worldwide are affected with rare diseases, a majority of which are genetic,” Turner said. “This seminar will offer information about emerging therapies and how to find them for everyone from patients, family members and friends to healthcare professionals interested in rare disease.”

Evenings with Genetics is a regular speaker series hosted by Baylor and Texas Children’s Hospital that offers the most current information on care and research advances for many genetic conditions. This event is co-sponsored by the Baylor Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
