Eligibility and Criteria

Information regarding the opportunity to receive this prestigious faculty educator award is disseminated through the leadership of the various schools of the College. The diverse types of educational work included in the criteria for eligibility also serve to ensure a breadth of nominees and recipients.

Eligibility

Rank must be at the associate or full professor level.

Duration of service must be at least 15 years at Baylor College of Medicine as a faculty member as of Jan. 1 of the year the candidate receives the award. Candidates with initial Baylor appointment at the level of full professor can be considered with a shorter length of service, with evidence of stellar and enduring educational contributions to the College.

Nominees must be active faculty members at Baylor to be considered.

Other educational awards, e.g. McGovern, Norton Rose Fulbright, Dresden, departmental awards, etc. constitute important evidence of educational achievements that would be expected to be considered in reviewing the educational activities of a Robertson nominee. Receipt of these awards neither precludes nor is a requirement for the Robertson Award.

Deans and department chairs are eligible if they meet educational criteria. Separating administrative and supervisory responsibilities from outstanding educational contributions is a challenging responsibility for such submissions. See special instructions found in How to Nominate a Faculty Member.

Nominees who were unsuccessful in becoming candidates may not be nominated during the next application cycle. Subsequent nominations must include new materials.

Candidates who do not receive the award following consideration at the final Selection Committee meeting can be considered the next year unless they withdraw their nomination. We recommend careful review and updating of materials.

Candidates who have failed to receive the award for a second year in a row may not be nominated during the next nomination cycle. Subsequent nominations must include new materials.

Educational Criteria

The criteria require detailed evidence of breadth and exceptional contributions to education.

Educational Breadth

Excellence in education may be found within a broad spectrum of endeavors. Important pieces of evidence of the nominee’s credentials include, but are not limited to:

  • Different levels or types of learners
  • Teaching in various disciplines/courses
  • Different styles/formats of teaching
  • Accepted and innovative curricula
  • Internal and external educational contributions

A great deal of diversity is both expected and valued.

Stellar and Enduring Educational Contributions

Stellar and enduring educational contributions to the educational mission of the College might include, but are not limited to:

  • Direct teaching
  • Mentoring
  • Educational leadership
  • Educational committee participation
  • Creation of educational materials
  • Educational research
  • All areas of educational scholarship (Note: This refers to any material, product or resource originally developed to fulfill a specific educational purpose that has been successfully peer- reviewed and is subsequently made public through appropriate dissemination for use by others.)
