Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship Curriculum

Over the course of our two-year Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship program you will spend 32 weeks focused on each of three areas:

  • Core Clinical PMH Skills
  • Systems and Scholarship
  • Individualized Curriculum

The curriculum meets all the ACGME Common Program Requirements for Pediatric Hospital Medicine.

Throughout the program, you will have a total of eight weeks vacation/PTO and work an average of one weekend out of every four weeks.

Core Clinical Rotations (32 Weeks)

Content

PHM Inpatient Service

• Hospital Medicine Teaching Services include a variety of clinical experiences such as general inpatient medicine, complex care, higher acuity in the intermediate care unit, newborn care, consultation, and co-management of surgical and subspecialty patients
• Community site PHM rotation (4 weeks)
• Pediatric Sedation Service (4 weeks)
• Blend of day and night shifts with initial direct supervision transitioning to indirect supervision by PHM faculty
• One weekend per block (two clinical shifts)

Systems & Scholarship (32 Weeks)

Content

During these blocks, the fellow will acquire knowledge and skills necessary to conduct scholarly projects and thus further the rising subspecialty field of pediatric hospital medicine. The fellow will choose one area of focus for their scholarly work. Possible areas of focus include:

  • Quality Improvement
  • Clinical & Translational Research
  • Medical Education
  • Leadership
  • Practice Management
  • Patient Safety
  • Advocacy

The fellow will also:

  • Attend the Texas Children’s Hospital AQI Course during the PGY-4 year
  • Participate in the Topics in Research longitudinal curriculum
  • Gain a level of competency in QI and exposure to clinical research principles
  • Learn how to critically assess the scientific merit of published research and lead peers in dialogue about practice change by preparing and leading thematic journal clubs
  • Acquire knowledge in basic clinical epidemiological principles and biostatistics
  • Complete a scholarly project with mentoring through a faculty member and the Scholarly Oversight Committee
  • Participate in the annual CHofSA Research Symposium
  • Submit an abstract to a national conference through the AAP, APA, and/or SHM and present at the conference if accepted
  • Prepare a manuscript as the final product of the scholarly project
  • Collaborate with the Voelcker Clinical Research Center

Longitudinal Curricula

Content

Teaching

  • Participate in Fellow-as-Teacher Longitudinal Curriculum
  • Develop expertise in leading family-centered rounds
  • Prepare and present lectures to Baylor College of Medicine and University of Incarnate Word medical students, 4th year medical students, pharmacy students, pediatric residents, family medicine residents, and staff during morning report, Noon Conference, and didactic sessions
  • Present at Grand Rounds
  • Attend the CHofSA Faculty Development Lecture Series
  • Learn how to give effective feedback to residents and students with observation and mentoring
  • Receive ongoing mentoring of teaching, communication skills, and interpersonal skills

Administration/Leadership

  • Participate in a Leadership Longitudinal Curriculum in the PGY-5 year
  • Join 1-2 administrative committees as an active member based on individual interest
  • Participate in all PHM Division meetings
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives
  • Participate in patient safety initiatives
  • Gain proficiency in billing and reimbursement processes
  • Gain exposure to marketing and financial management in healthcare

Career Development

  • Develop and maintain an Individual Learning Plan recognizing that self-directing life-long learning is essential for a successful career
