Pediatric Sports Medicine Fellowship

About the Program

The Pediatric Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship is an ACGME-approved one-year fellowship in the Division of Adolescent Medicine and Sports Medicine, Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine. Baylor is located in Houston’s Texas Medical Center, the largest medical center in the world.

The fellowship enhances Texas Children’s Hospital by encouraging the use of the latest sports medicine knowledge and techniques by all faculty involved in the program, with the result being the best care for our patients. The strengths of our fellowship is the faculty’s commitment to education and patient care, state-of-the-art facilities, relationships with academic and community based sports, and community support.

  • Adult and pediatric patients in the Sports Medicine Clinic at Texas Children’s in the Texas Medical Center, West Campus, The Woodlands and community-based Texas Children's Specialty Care Centers
  • Collegiate training room and event coverage for Texas Southern University
  • Training room or school-based sports clinics at four high schools in the Houston area
  • Continuity clinic with community-based pediatrician certified in sports medicine
  • Clinical evaluation of adolescent and sports nutrition issues by a board-certified sports dietitian
  • Clinic and operating room instruction with sports medicine trained orthopedic surgeons specializing in elbow and hand, shoulders, hips, knees, foot and ankle, and spine
  • Instruction from orthopedic surgeons that are team physicians for the Houston Astros, Houston Texans, Houston Rockets, and Houston Dynamo
  • Adult- and pediatric-trained musculoskeletal radiologists and ultrasonographer
  • Private practice physiatrist trained in MSK ultrasound and medical acupuncture
  • Physical therapy with specialist in pediatric sports and manual therapy
  • Clinic and operating room experience with adult and pediatric trained sports medicine orthopedic surgeons

Qualifications

Fellow applicants are completing or have completed training in pediatrics or combined internal medicine and pediatrics program.

Admissions

Admission requirements include a completed residency in Pediatrics or combined Internal Medicine and Pediatric program. Applications are submitted through ERAS.

Clinical Experiences

  • The Sports Medicine Clinic and community-based Texas Children's Specialty Care Centers, in which patients of all ages are seen by one of six fellowship-trained, board certified/eligible sports medicine physicians
  • Training room and game coverage for Texas Southern University athletics
  • Training room or school-based sports clinics at four high schools, including game coverage
  • Continuity clinic with community-based, pediatrician fellowship-trained, certified in sports medicine
  • Mass participation events including the Houston Marathon and Texas Children's Family Fun Run 

Additional Experiences

The additional required experiences of the fellowship include:

  • Clinical evaluation of nutrition problems with a board-certified specialist in the Sports Dietetic (CSSD) Clinic
  • Clinical rotation with a pediatric sports fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons, clinic and operating room
  • Clinical rotation with sports medicine-trained orthopedic surgeons specializing in elbow and hand, shoulders, hips, knees, foot and ankle, and spine, clinic and operating room
  • Conferences and reading room with MSK radiologist specializing in MRI and Ultrasound,
  • Clinic with sports-trained Physiatrist specializing in MSK ultrasound
  • Clinic with board-certified sports physical therapists (SCS)

Academic Development

During the first part of the year, the fellow will be a teaching assistant in an anatomy lab for first-year medical students. Throughout the year, they will also participate (and teach) in regularly scheduled practical and didactic conferences (2-3 per week) including topics of exercise physiology, subspecialty sports topics, MSK radiology, journal club, book chapter review, physical exam techniques, and other primary care sports topics.

The fellow will attend the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine National Conference in April. Academic development includes participation in the Fellow’s College Curriculum for Baylor Pediatric Fellows and opportunities to collaborate on developing sports medicine case reports and research.
