Adult Neurology Residency Curriculum

Clinical Experience

Neurological disease have a diverse and wide breadth of presentations and complications. The wide diversity of patients seen in our hospitals exposes our residents to a myriad of neurologic disorders and provides a broad exposure to all aspects of neurology: acute neurological emergencies, common chronic diseases, neurological complications of medical diseases, as well as tertiary referral neurology. By rotating in a private tertiary referral hospital, one of the largest VA hospitals, and a county hospital in one of the most diverse and largest cities in the country, residents experience the entire breadth of neurologic disease and patient populations as well as learning to operate in different hospital systems. There are thousands of neurology admissions per year to our hospitals and thousands more consults and outpatient encounters, ensuring residents a diverse and unique clinical experience.

The PGY1 year consists of internal medicine requirements, one block of psychiatry, and three blocks of inpatient neurology. The PGY2 year focuses on inpatient neurology at each of our three main hospitals with some additional general outpatient experience and a block of neurophysiology. The PGY3 year focuses on consultative neurology as well as subspecialty outpatient experience. The PGY4 year focuses on leadership in inpatient neurology, further subspecialty exposure, as well as electives.

The PGY2-PGY4 residents participate in a weekly continuity clinic throughout their training with an individual panel of patients.

Didactics

There are daily noon didactics for the department as well as residents. Weekly Adult Neurology Grand Rounds, Pediatric Neurology Grand Rounds, as well as a Neurology Resident Lecture series on rotating topics in neurology plus Friday interactive conferences including neuroradiology, neuropathology, Case of the Week, Professor Rounds, journal clubs, movement disorders video rounds, and QI session. Additional subspecialty didactics are available and elective.

Research

Residents have the opportunity to participate in multiple research projects through their residency with neurology faculty members.  Case reports, posters at national meetings, database reviews, original research, and quality projects are all encouraged and common.

Wellness

Monthly conferences and activities are dedicated to resident wellness.

Events include:

  • New Resident Welcome
  • Conference in Hermann Park
  • Annual Neurology Gingerbread Decorating Contest
  • Neurology Holiday Party
  • Neurology Pictionary
  • Attending Lunches
  • Neurology Graduation
  • Lots of restaurants and Houston events

Mentorship

Neurology residents are assigned a mentor in the PGY1 year and are encouraged to seek out additional mentorship as they refine their subspecialty career and research interests.

Residents are expected to produce three examples of scholarship during their training. Scholarship may take the form of journal articles of all types, posters at either regional or national meetings, a Case-of-the-Month, or a Performance Improvement project.
