About the Program
The Department of Anesthesiology at Baylor College of Medicine offers one position per year to the 12-month ACGME-accredited Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship. Fellows will gain experience in advanced clinical care and learn to become leaders in caring for healthy and high-risk parturients. Fellows will participate in the management of patients scheduled for fetal surgery procedures at the prestigious Texas Children’s hospital for a month and are required to initiate a research project.
The Harris Health Service at Ben Taub Hospital, affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine, provides comprehensive Maternal Level IV of Care while serving the community of Harris County in Houston. At Ben Taub Hospital, we perform approximately 3,500 deliveries, and the majority of our obstetric patients are high-risk or critically ill parturients with the following conditions: placenta accreta spectrum (PAS), congenital heart disease, peripartum cardiomyopathy, and preeclampsia with severe features. SOAP designated our hospital a Center of Excellence because of the outstanding perinatal care rendered at Ben Taub.
Eight dedicated obstetric anesthesiologists are the primary educators in the fellowship program. In addition, faculty members in the medical school’s Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology’s Divisions of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Neonatology, and Critical Care Medicine are integral to the fellow’s educational experience. All our educators are dedicated to providing a well-rounded educational experience for anesthesiologists interested in a career in obstetric anesthesiology.

Curriculum
The following is the curriculum details for the Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship Program:
The obstetric anesthesia fellow will complete clinical rotations at Ben Tab Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine which includes the labor and delivery unit and the obstetric operating rooms. There is also a one-month rotation at Texas Children’s Hospital where the fellow provides anesthesia for fetal surgery cases in the Pavilion for Women, Texas Children's and neonatal cases at the main Texas Children's Hospital location. The fellow participates in the multidisciplinary conferences for every fetal surgery case during the month of rotation at Texas Children's.
The fellow assumes direct patient care with a focus on complex high-risk and critically parturients including peripartum care. The fellow participates in multi-disciplinary rounds, evaluates high-risk patients and coordinates consultation with other appropriate services which include Maternal Fetal Medicine, Cardiology, Pulmonary, Hematology and Critical Care Medicine. The fellow will also supervise and teach medical students, residents and student nurses anesthetists.
The follow participates in resident lectures and attends a fellow level lecture with the Maternal Fetal Medicine fellow or sometimes with a member of the faculty with expertise in obstetric anesthesia. The fellow will attend the fetal heart rate course discussed by the MFM faculty. In addition, the fellows will participate in Grand Round conferences which include: Quality Assurance, case conferences, departmental and simulation in airway management skills. The fellow also gets to participate in the SOAP webinars offered monthly. The fellow is required to have ACLS certification and Neonatal resuscitation certification.
The fellow has protected research time for pursing research and other academic interest: Baylor College of Medicine has classes related to research topics (e.g., study design, implementation, statistical analysis, and manuscript preparation) which are open to fellows. The fellow under the mentorship of the faculty, will design, implement, and publish an abstract on at least one research project.
