Microbial ecology is the study of microorganisms (e.g., bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses), their interaction with the environment, and their interactions with one another. Whether the “environment” is a healthy child’s gastrointestinal tract, a diseased airway, or a bioreactor system, principles of microbial ecology inform our work, shape the questions we ask, and help us to understand our findings in the context of complex living systems.
