Professional Statement

My research focuses on population health addressing health disparities as it relates to obesity and chronic disease prevention among children and parents from low-income, racial/ethnic minority populations through research, training and policy involvement. My research work can be placed in to three categories: food insecurity, hunger, and racial and economic disparities in diet; effects of food assistance programs on nutrition and health outcomes; and community-engaged approaches to population health including design, implementation, and evaluation of interventions in preschool, schools, and family- and community-based settings.

Cultivating Health: Integrating The Balance Living Curriculum with Gardening Education in Rural Texas Communities #2026-46100-47125: (09/30/2026 - 09/29/2029); Grant funding from USDA/NIFA; Principal Investigator of Subcontract The overall objective is to improve health and well-being among children and families in rural Texas communities by integrating evidence-based health education from The Balanced Living curriculum with experiential gardening education to increase knowledge, skills, self-efficacy, and adoption of healthy nutrition and lifestyle behaviors.

Empowering Families: Culinary Medicine for Managing Pediatric Chronic Kidney Disease #R21 NR022138: (09/14/2026 - 08/31/2028); Grant funding from NIH/NIDDK; Co-Principal Investigator (Elizabeth Onugha, Contact PI) The major goal of the study is to develop and evaluate a culinary medicine curriculum tailored for pediatric patients with chronic kidney disease, incorporating stakeholder input, to optimize feasibility and effectiveness.

Comparative Feasibility and Effectiveness of Medically Tailored Meals Approaches for Pediatric End Stage Kidney Disease #R01 DK141577: (09/09/2025 - 06/30/2028); Grant funding from NIH/NIDDK; Co-Principal Investigator (Contact PI) The major goal of this two-arm randomized trial is to assess the feasibility, comparative effectiveness and budget impact of two medically-tailored meals (MTM) strategies - CM-based MTMs and home delivered pre-prepared MTM - for pediatric patients with end stage kidney disease (ESKD).

A Pilot and Feasibility Evaluation of Food Prescription to Address Food Insecurity among Youth with Type 1 Diabetes #R01 DK140212: (06/20/2025 - 05/31/2028); Grant funding from NIH/NIDDK; Co-Investigator (PI: Ashley Butler, BCM) The goal of the project is to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary outcomes of a healthy eating program that consists of Food Rx combined with a healthy eating curriculum refined for families of youth with Type 1 Diabetes (ages 10-15 years) from food insecure households.

Examine Drivers of Obesity Risk in Youth from Under-Represented Families #58-3092-5-008: (10/01/2024 - 09/30/2029); Grant funding from USDA/ARS; Co-Principal Investigator The major goals are to: 1) assess fruit and vegetable (FV) purchases among SNAP households with children and how they compare with FV purchases among non-SNAP households; and 2) assess the relationship between FV purchases, availability of FV at home, and food and nutrition security among SNAP and non-SNAP households with children.

Integrating Food Rx with Best Feeding Practices for Chronic Disease Prevention among EFNEP Participants #USDA 2022-68015-36280: (04/01/2022 - 03/31/2027); Grant funding from USDA/NIFA; Principal Investigator The goal of this randomized controlled trial is to assess the impact of integrating best feeding practices and food prescription with EFNEP programming to prevent chronic diseases in young children.
