Professional Statement
Dr. Vidya Fleetwood, a liver, kidney and pancreas transplant surgeon, in the Division of Abdominal Transplantation, earned her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and completed her general surgery residency on the research track at Rush University Medical Center, where she began transplant-related research on normothermic perfusion and autoimmune liver disease. She went on to complete a two-year abdominal transplantation fellowship at the University of Wisconsin, receiving advanced training in liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation, as well as living donor nephrectomy.Dr. Fleetwood has a particular focus on living donor kidney transplantation and expanding access to kidney transplants. Her research and clinical work have centered on optimizing outcomes in older recipients, increasing use of extended criteria donors and reducing barriers to living donor exchange. She has published extensively on donor safety, autonomy and post-donation outcomes and continues to explore ways to improve quality and access in transplantation.
