Muhammad Aurangzeb Ahmad, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. Before coming to Baylor, Dr. Ahmad spent ten years at the intersection of Artificial intelligence and healthcare in the industry. He was Principal Data Scientist at Kaiser Permanente and Director of AI at various healthcare startups. His previous academic appointments have included a Research Fellowship at Harborview Medical Center, an Adjunct Professorship at the University of Washington Bothell, and affiliate faculty roles with the University of Washington's Responsible AI Systems and Experiences program and its Science + Technology Initiative. Dr. Ahmad is an accomplished machine learning and artificial intelligence researcher with more than 80 peer-review publications, including a book on predictive modeling. His research has been widely covered by the media including New York Times, Wired, the BBC, and PBS. His research is focused on advancing the scientific understanding of how AI behaves in clinical environments, improving the practice of medicine through rigorous predictive modeling and surgical decision support, and the governance and ethics of AI in healthcare.
