Professional Statement

I was raised in Houston and attended the University of Georgia for my first year of college. I then transferred and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BSA in Human Development and Family Science. I believe my curiosity for genetics stems from my background as an international adoptee and not fully knowing my genetic background. I experienced many moments where I questioned my identity and wondering where I came from but eventually learned how to navigate this uncertainty. As I continued to learn about genetic counseling and shadow genetic counselors, I realized this was the perfect career where, although I would never have this genetic knowledge for myself, I knew I could help other people navigate their own genetic information and uncertainty.

Throughout my time at the UT Austin, I was a research assistant, crisis counselor, and volunteer at several rare disorder organizations as well as an adoption agency. These experiences expanded my knowledge of rare diseases, how to be an advocate for not only the individuals themselves but also their support network, and the power of empathy especially in difficult times. In particular, while working at the adoption agency, I witnessed many difficult moments with birth parents and adoptive parents and learned how to navigate complex conversations while ensuring every party felt fully informed and empowered about their decision.

As a native Houstonian, I am excited and beyond grateful to be a part of the Baylor College of Medicine Genetic Counseling Program Class of 2028. I cannot wait to grow both professionally and personally to become an empathetic advocate for my patients and enter the evolving field of genetic counseling. For any prospective students, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, I am more than happy to help in any way that I can and am excited you're pursuing this program and career!
