Professional Statement

Dr. Andrea Stolar is a board-certified forensic psychiatrist whose primary roles at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) are in medical education and the psychiatric assessment and care of justice involved individuals. Formerly the Senior Associate Dean of Student Affairs and the founding Medical Director for the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center (MED VAMC) Veterans Court Programs, Dr. Stolar continues to enjoy working with students and trainees as a consultant to the office of Student Affairs and core faculty for the newly accredited Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Dr. Stolar is a graduate of Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and completed her psychiatry residency at BCM and the University of South Florida College of Medicine. She completed a fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). Prior to returning to BCM in 2008, Dr. Stolar was lead psychiatrist for the university counseling and health services at CWRU, where she was awarded Outstanding New Professional for her work in integrating depression care into primary care. She also held the position of Program Director for the General Psychiatry Residency Program, University Hospitals, Case Medical Center. From 2011 to 2017 Dr. Stolar was the Director of Residency Education for the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at BCM before moving into the office of student affairs.

Dr. Stolar has been actively involved in graduate and undergraduate medical education across the College and nationally. Within BCM, Dr. Stolar initiated multiple new programs in UME, including the Discovery, Integration, Success, Community, Outreach (DISCO) Program, she served on GME Executive Committee, and has contributed to, and chaired, committees and workgroups related to professionalism, appeals, grievances, curriculum development, student wellness, and professional practice. Nationally, Dr. Stolar chaired the Forensic Psychiatry Working Group, Subspecialty Milestone Project and participated in the Subspecialty Milestone Project 2.0. She is a longstanding member of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL) Education Committee. She served as Vice Chair and member of the Executive Committee of the Residency Review Committee for Psychiatry and continues as a member of the Appeals Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). As a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), Dr. Stolar served on the Council on Psychiatry and the Law and chaired the Committee on Psychiatry and the Workplace. Dr. Stolar is currently serving on her second term as a Director for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).
