Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship

Program Overview

The fellowship program in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine provides an opportunity for high-quality hands-on training in all aspects of pulmonary and critical care.

The program's mission is to train skilled clinicians, physician-scientists and clinical educators. This is accomplished through intensive exposure to diverse clinical services in the inpatient and outpatient settings, a robust didactic educational program and institutional research opportunities. The section’s focus complements Baylor's mission of excellence in research, education and service.

Baylor's basic and clinical research programs are funded by more than $208 million annually, placing us among the best of the nation's 125 medical schools in extramural research support. Faculty members hold numerous leadership positions within national scientific societies and participate actively in national and international scientific meetings related to clinical and basic science investigation.

The clinical activities of the section are based in three hospitals within the Texas Medical Center: Ben Taub Hospital, Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, and the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center.

This learning environment is one unique aspect of the program, with hands-on experience in specialty areas such as:

  • Lung transplantation
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Pulmonary arterial hypertension
  • Interventional pulmonary
  • Lung cancer
  • Asthma
  • COPD
  • Occupational disorders.
  • Management of ARDS
  • Sepsis
  • Post-cardiothoracic surgery patients
  • LVADs
  • ECMO
  • Other aspects of critical care medicine.

Applications for the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine fellowship training program are accepted through ERAS. For more information, contact Sylvia Villarreal and check our admissions section.

Admissions

The Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine welcomes applications for our fellowship programs. We offer 5-7 positions/year in pulmonary and critical care medicine.

Applicants must be board-eligible in internal medicine before starting the fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine. This usually requires that the applicant be currently enrolled and completed a three-year residency or have already completed a three-year residency in an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine training program in the United States.

We welcome applications from all qualified individuals irrespective of sex, racial or ethnic background, religious affiliation or marital status. We currently accept applications from U.S. citizens, green card holders, and non-immigrant visa holders (J-1 only).

We exclusively use the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship (PCCM), which is sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges. Applications are accepted through ERAS beginning in July each year.

To submit applications through ERAS, applicants must contact the ERAS Fellowship Documents Office and request an electronic token, which is then used for access to the ERAS application site. The following materials must be submitted through ERAS:

  • ERAS application
  • Curriculum vitae (ERAS format is acceptable)
  • Personal statement
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Medical school transcript
  • USMLE results
  • Photograph
  • Your email address
  • A copy of your ECFMG certificate and visa, if applicable

Upon reviewing these materials, applicants with competitive credentials are invited for interviews at the program. You will receive an email/letter/phone call informing you if an interview has been granted. Virtual interviews are conducted from September-October.

PCCM Fellowship program positions are offered exclusively through the National Residency Matching Program.
