Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Fellowship

About the Program

The Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine is an ACGME-accredited, two-year program designed to provide fellows with maximum clinical exposure to the breadth of endocrinology while also providing unparalleled research opportunities in preparation for an independent academic career. Physicians with exceptional clinical skills who intend to pursue a career in clinical endocrinology will be considered for fellowship positions as well.

The fellowship program is led by Dr. Ruchi Gaba, who serves as faculty at both Harris Health System and Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, along with Dr. Bahar Force, the Associate Program Director, who is also faculty at both institutions.

History

The program was first developed by Dr. Peter Kohler, chief of the endocrine division from 1972-1977. Dr. James B. Field served as division chief until 1987. Under Dr. Field's leadership, the division expanded its research capabilities and was funded by NIH for a Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Center. The program structure was developed under Dr. Ashok Balasubramanyam, who led the program for 15 years. Under his direction, the program expanded to its current size of five fellows per year involving five hospital sites, the largest in the country. Dr. Susan Samson followed as program director from 2014-2020 and then Dr. Sanjay Mediwala from 2020-2023.

Admissions and Benefits

Applicants interested in our fellowship program are required to use the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applicants can apply to the program as early as mid-June.

Applicants must provide (via ERAS):

  • Three letters of recommendation
  • USMLE and/or COMPLEX scores

The program begins on July 1 of each year with no exceptions.

Interviews are scheduled from August through mid-October.

While we give preference to applicants who signal our program, we also take a holistic approach when reviewing applications, considering the overall strength of each applicant’s portfolio. Please note that program signaling will not influence our rank list decisions.

Once an ERAS application is received, applicants will be notified if any additional information is needed. Interview invitations will be extended to qualified applicants who demonstrate a strong potential fit with our program.

For this application season, all interviews will be conducted remotely via Teams.

Baylor College of Medicine cannot accommodate applicants requesting H1 visa status due to Texas Workforce regulations. Qualified applicants holding other visa designations are welcome to apply.

See stipends and benefit information on the Baylor College of Medicine’s graduate medical education website. Stipend levels are at the national average, but Houston's cost of living ranks among the lowest of metropolitan areas in the United States.

Student Wellness
