Dr. Sumitra Khandelwal is a Professor of Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine’s Cullen Eye Institute and serves as Associate Medical Director of CorneaGen. She is a nationally and internationally recognized specialist in cataract, cornea, and refractive surgery.
Her clinical expertise includes advanced cataract surgery, premium intraocular lens surgery, laser vision correction, and lens-based refractive surgery, with a focus on helping patients reduce their dependence on glasses and contact lenses. She has extensive experience with the full spectrum of refractive procedures and perform SMILEPro, a minimally invasive laser vision correction procedure and alternative to LASIK.
Dr. Khandelwal is widely recognized for her expertise in managing complex cataract and corneal cases. She is a frequent invited lecturer at national and international meetings and has spoken around the world on advanced cataract surgery, premium lens technology, refractive surgery, corneal disease, and strategies for managing challenging anterior segment cases.
Dr. Khandelwal has held several national leadership roles in ophthalmology. She previously served as Chair of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Complex Cataract Surgery Committee and currently serves on the ASCRS Cornea Committee and Membership Committee. She is also a Past President of Cedars Aspens, an invitation-only honorary society of leading ophthalmic surgeons dedicated to education, innovation, and collaboration. She has also served on the American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting Cataract Committee.
She is an Associate Editor of *Corneal Cross-Linking, 2nd Edition* and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in cataract, cornea, and refractive surgery.
Dr. Khandelwal has been consistently recognized for clinical excellence, including annual recognition as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor, selection to *Texas Super Doctors*, and recognition as an Outstanding Female Leader in Ophthalmology.
Outside of ophthalmology, Dr. Khandelwal loves traveling, working out with friends, exploring Houston’s amazing restaurant scene, and chasing after her three kids — and occasionally her husband.
