DeBakey High School for Health Professions Alumni Spotlights

“I had heard about a high school in Houston in a documentary that offered a unique educational model for students interested in medicine at the high school level,” Campbell said. “I knew I wanted to be a doctor long before high school, so when I heard we were moving to Houston, one of my first thoughts was about the unique high school there. Shortly after we moved, I applied.”

Campbell now serves as professor of pediatrics in the division of infectious diseases at Baylor College of Medicine and as a clinician-educator at Texas Children’s Hospital. She carries out her passion for medical education and clinical care every day.

"I wanted to be a pediatrician and growing up science fair was my sport of choice. A school of health professions was ideal to pursue both of those interests. It was very ethnically diverse. It was a very comfortable place to be a brown girl focused on STEM."

Precious Williams Owodunni, a member of Baylor College of Medicine’s Board of Trustees and chief executive officer and founder of Mountaintop Consulting now serves as an independent board member of Cadence Bank and the Episcopal Health Foundation.

"Going to a health professions high school, we had a very high standard we were held to. It was truly a college prep school in that sense. I feel the transition to undergraduate education was smoother because of the experience I had at DeBakey High School for Health Professions."

Dr. Sara Andrabi now serves as an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Baylor College of Medicine after graduating from DeBakey High School for Health Professions in 2004. 

"DeBakey High School challenged me like no other school had before to work and think above my comfort level and taught me the study skills that I use to this day as a graduate learner."

Fernando Hernandez is currently an Internal Medicine-Pediatrics intern at Baylor College of Medicine and graduated from DeBakey High School for Health Professions in 2014.
