Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center

About Us

The Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at Baylor College of Medicine is devoted to improving the lives of patients with breast cancer through excellence in medical and surgical care, clinical research and fundamental studies into the nature of the disease.

Our clinical programs include a deep commitment to service in the Harris Heath System where we are grateful to Lester and Sue Smith for their investment in the Breast Center. This has greatly facilitated our ability to impact the lives of a racially diverse population of patients with or at risk from breast cancer. Our clinical research program is also very active at the Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center and the Baylor outpatient clinic.

Our extensive laboratory research program is focused on the development of new treatments and we are actively studying new approaches to the treatment of triple negative breast cancer and estrogen receptor positive disease. For HER2 positive disease, we are studying low toxicity approaches where we may be able to achieve excellent outcomes with simpler drug regimens. Fundamentally we believe that new approaches to early detection, prevention and treatment will stem from scientific advances driven by the study of our patients experiences with breast cancer and the biological processes that are unleashed when a normal breast cell become malignant and then transforms into a lethal systemic and drug resistant disease.

Breast Care Center
The Breast Care Center offers comprehensive, compassionate care for women and men with breast disease and cancer. Clinical research is an integral component of the center, which offers nationwide and local regional clinical studies in all aspects of breast health.
Breast Research Program
Physicians and scientists in the Breast Research Program are internationally recognized for their work. Currently this group is one of only six recipients nationally of the NIH Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) Grant in Breast Cancer, which highlights the accomplishments and productivity of the program.
Medical Education
Training of physicians, fellows, medical students and other healthcare providers is also an integral function of the Smith Breast Center. Generous resources are available to recruit 5-7 new faculty members over the next several years. Funds are also available for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and major equipment purchase, so that rapid growth of both the clinical and research programs is expected in the next few years.

Part of an NCI-Designated Cancer Center

Many members of the Lester & Sue Smith Breast Center are also members of the breast research program within the Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center. The Smith Breast Center is a major component of the Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center at Baylor College of Medicine, which brings together research, patient care, education and outreach activities from Baylor and its affiliated hospitals to expedite the fight against this devastating disease. The Duncan Cancer Center has been named a designated cancer center by the National Cancer Institute, a significant milestone that opens the doors for additional funding to combat cancer. It is one of two NCI-designated centers in Houston.
