Natural Background Variation

Natural background radiation coming from cosmic rays, the earth's crust, and food can vary from place to place. Altitude is one factor that plays a role in radiation levels, as does geology. The graph below shows the variation in natural background radiation in some cities in the United States. The vertical bars depict the radiation levels, while the blue sloped area represents the city's height above sea level.
