For the past five decades, the Jasper's Basic Mechanisms of the Epilepsies (BME) Workshops has provided a unique opportunity for basic research scientists in epilepsy to assess where the field of epilepsy has been, what it has accomplished, and where it should go. The last meeting was held in 2009, and it is once again time to stimulate a new intellectual ferment in understanding the genetic, molecular, cellular, and systems mechanisms of the epilepsies.
These workshops have led to the publication of four editions of the leading textbook in the field, Jasper's Basic Mechanisms of the Epilepsies. We are now planning the fifth BME Workshops, which will include over 70 leading expert investigators participating in 14 workshops and poster sessions held over four days in the early spring of 2019. Five senior editors are responsible for the organization and editing of the textbook, assisted by 10 associate editors.
The Workshops not only address fundamental epilepsy research but also emphasize the translation of new knowledge of epilepsy disease mechanisms into new strategies for epilepsy treatment.
