Stanley H. Appel, MD, professor and chairman of the Department of Neurology at Baylor College of Medicine, was awarded the 2003 American Academy of Neurology Sheila Essey Award for ALS Research on April 2.

Appel received the award during the American Academy of Neurology's 55th Annual Meeting in Honolulu for his research Inflammation in Neurodegenerative Disease: Lessons from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

The Sheila Essey Award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions in research in the search for the cause, treatment, prevention and cure for ALS. The award, supported through the philanthropy of the Essey family, is presented by the American Academy of Neurology and the ALS Association.
