Community celebration

Peggy Smith Celebration

The Baylor and Houston communities celebrated the 50 years of service of Dr. Peggy Smith at a recent ceremony, where Smith was presented with a Congressional Recognition certificate and an American flag that flew over the Capital from U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee. Watch this video to learn more about Smith's career as director of the Baylor Teen Health Clinic.

Flu vaccine information

Baylor employees, trainees and students can get their flu shot on campus through the Occupational Health Program starting Sept. 26. You must reserve a time slot in advance through the BCM Flu Vaccine app. Check the app regularly for new dates and locations for flu shots. The flu vaccine is required by Baylor policy. You must get the shot and complete attestation, or submit an exemption request, by Nov. 30, also using the Flu Vaccine app. Other options to get the flu vaccine include:

The bivalent COVID booster is not required for those who are up to date with their initial vaccine and booster series, but can be given at the same time as the flu vaccine, if available at that location.

Diversity Week 2022 – Record your video!

The Office of Communications & Community Outreach invites you to participate in this year's College-wide National Diversity & Inclusion Week video. Record a video of you saying the Baylor College of Medicine Mission Statement (view it here)  and submit it via this form by Sept. 27 to be featured in the video. We encourage submissions in your native language. We hope to see your face on our screen soon! Videos will be featured in Baylor communications and on our social media during Diversity & Inclusion Week, Oct. 3 - 7. 

HR news: Staff Performance Management

Performance management self-evaluations are due through SuccessFactors by Sept. 19 at 11:59 p.m. After that date, any incomplete evaluations will transfer "as is" to the manager step. This is an opportunity to be an active participant in the process by sharing your accomplishments, challenges and lessons learned from the past year. Research study opportunities

Nutrition and Pregnancy Study: Women in the first trimester of pregnancy are needed for a study of how nutrition throughout pregnancy impacts mothers and infants. The study involves four visits during pregnancy and one postpartum visit with the option to enroll infants. Visits involve body composition measurements, blood and milk samples, surveys on health and food, optical skin measurements and vision testing. Eligible participants must be healthy and meet body mass index criteria. Intolerance of uncertainty among providers: Participants are needed for a study to explore how differences in genetics and non-genetics providers' intolerance of uncertainty impacts their ability to appropriately interpret genetic test results. Licensed physicians across all specialties (including individuals participating in residency or fellowship training) and board-certified genetic counselors are eligible to participate in this study. Community event on Alzheimer's research

Join "Let's Talk About Alzheimer's Research: A Community Event," Friday, Sept. 30, 9 – 11 a.m. at the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute, where presenters will explain Alzheimer's disease and dementia, if early detection is possible, how genetic testing can be used, current research opportunities and how to participate/enroll in those initiatives. The event is free and open to the public, but space is limited, and registration is required. Hosted by Baylor, Houston Methodist Hospital, the Duncan NRI at Texas Children's Hospital and the Alzheimer's Association.

DBS for OCD Workshop

On Oct. 14, Drs. Wayne Goodman, Eric Storch and Sameer Sheth of the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Department of Neurosurgery, will host a one-day workshop focused on practical management of deep brain stimulation for OCD at the Intercontinental Hotel – Medical Center, 6750 Main St. In addition to morning sessions on history, candidacy, pre-surgical therapies and ethics, there will be longer case-based sessions in the afternoon focused on surgical targeting and device programming. Pediatric Paracorporeal and Extracorporeal Therapies Summit

Pediatric paracorporeal and extracorporeal therapies (PPET) are increasingly used to support children with multiple organ failure. However, these innovative and highly complex technologies lack clinical guidelines or consensus statements regarding their use. The PPET Summit 2022, Oct. 17 – 18, will transform these critical gaps into knowledge and research opportunities by bringing together pediatric and adult experts from Baylor, Texas Children's and other institutions across the globe in the fields of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, ventricular assist device, renal replacement therapy, extracorporeal liver support and apheresis. Walks for good causes

Breast Cancer Awareness 5K: The annual Susan G. Komen Houston Race for the Cure will be at 8 a.m. Oct. 1. The 5K race begins at Sam Houston Park downtown. Join the Baylor team and donate here

BCM Wellness 5K: Register here to run or walk the student-organized BCM Wellness 5K on Oct. 22, starting and finishing at the McGovern Commons and supporting Grants for Leadership Opportunities in Wellness (GLOW). Alex's 5K & Kids 1K: Sign up here for the race, Nov. 5 at MacGregor Park. The event is held in honor of Alex Jamrich, son of Baylor faculty member Milan Jamrich and his wife who died in an autism-related accident, and raises money for autism organizations. 

Walk to End Alzheimer's: The 5K walk will be held Nov. 5 at the University of Houston's Lynn Eusan Park, 4800 Calhoun Rd, or through walk-from-home options. Baylor has many teams participating; join one here (in the drop-down menu, scroll to 'Local Companies, Schools and Organizations and select Baylor College of Medicine).


Awards and Recognitions

Haq to head AAP global health section

Dr. Heather HaqDr. Heather Haq, assistant professor of pediatrics and chief medical officer for the Baylor College of Medicine International Pediatric AIDS Initiative (BIPAI) at Texas Children's Hospital, was elected as the incoming chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Global Health, effective Nov. 1. An executive committee member since 2018, Haq will focus on expanding the efforts of the Section on Global Health in the coming years.

Martinez elected to board of Cord Blood Association

Dr. Caridad MartinezDr. Caridad "Cary" Martinez, associate professor of pediatrics – hematology and oncology and medical director of the Bone Marrow Transplant Program at Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center, was recently elected as a member of the Board of Directors of the Cord Blood Association. The international, non-profit organization promotes both public and family cord blood banking with the objectives of saving lives, improving health and changing medicine.  

Grants support ethics projects

Dr. Kristin KostickDr. Eric StorchDr. Christi GuerriniDr. Kristin Kostick, assistant professor in the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, and Dr. Eric Storch, professor and vice chair of the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, have received two recent NIH grants – A four-year, $1.98 million R01 grant from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences for their project to identify and anticipate benefits and concerns of integrating perceptual computing into clinical care, and a one-year, $323,000 supplement grant from the National Institute on Mental Health for their research to identify stakeholder attitudes and incentives for using smart contracts in consent and protection for digital phenotyping data. Co-investigators on these projects include Dr. Jennifer Blumenthal-Barby and Dr. Charles Minard. In addition, Dr. Christi Guerrini, assistant professor in the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, received a one-year, $170,500 supplement grant from the National Human Genome Research Institute for her project to examine social media coverage of investigative genealogy with the goal of characterizing the volume and patterns in these public conversations.
